25 Editionen und ein anonymes Original

Please scroll down for English version

And your bird can sing“, 2008.

“Water, Cheese, Fire” presents all of Christian Jankowski’s editions dating back to 1992, the beginning of his career. In this concentrated constellation, the editions embody the many artistic strategies of this internationally renowned artist. The exhibit is a “compact retrospective,” its 25 works offering a comprehensive and unusual overview of Jankowski’s oeuvre.

The first room of the gallery displays objects, photos, and prints in Petersburg hanging.” Composed as full-wall installations, the pieces invite the viewer to discover continuities, breaks, and innovations within the body of work. The editions themselves cover a wide spectrum: for example photographs from “Die Jagd” (The Hunt), 1992/97, contrast two-sided framed color photos from “Direktor Pudel” (Director Poodle), 1998, or guitar-shaped CD players from “And your bird can sing,” 2008. On the opposite wall, original shelves from the former stationary shop are completely filled with copies of Jankowski’s recent catalog “Heavy Weight History.” With a wink and a grin, the literal weight of this presentation alludes to the historic gravitas of the artist’s nearly 25 years of production. Adjacent to the shelves, the hanging small-format edition “Heavy Weight History” examines our relationship to history through photos of weightlifters hoisting various Warsaw monuments into the air. A Polish sports journalist comments on the scenes in brief sentences scribbled underneath each photo.

Conceived of as a video rental, the second gallery room – a projection space – allows for an in-depth exploration of Jankowski’s performance art. Video editions such as “Die Jagd” (The Hunt), 1992; “Sprachkurs: Dänisch für deutsche Künstler und Deutsch für dänische Künstler” (Language Course: Danish for German Artists and German for Danish Artists), 1995; “Mein Leben als Taube” (My Life as a Dove), 1996; and “Das Geschenk” (The Present), 2010 can be shown upon request. Jankowski’s films often touch on the same core themes – questioning identity through role-play, manipulating the passage of time, reflecting upon the filmic medium – but draw on an immense range of aesthetic formulations to do so.

Jankowski’s enduring conceptual and formal surprise surfaces once again in the edition “Aufstellung” (Arrangement), 2014. The piece is based on a performance of the same name, which took place in 2012 at a conference on the state of the Berlin art scene at the Podewil Cultural Center. On Jankowski’s initiative, a psychotherapist arranged representatives of the art scene in constellations reflecting their relationships to each other. The edition consists of a video documenting this performance, as well as a photo showing the scene’s ideal arrangement five years in the future. The protagonists have been nudged closer together – a vision whose accurate premonition is reflected today in the success of Gallery Weekend.

The group of photographs Staatsgeschenke (2010) comprises a selection of official international state presents given to the German chancellor during the last 60 years. Each image shows a gift which now, if its value exceeded 120 EUR, has become the property of the Federal Republic of Germany. These objects are now stored in showcases and a storage room in the chancellor’s office.

State presents are encoded political-cultural messages revealing the quality of the relations between states and their representatives. A multitude of considerations are finally manifested in a highly symbolical sculptural object. The series of photographs, take en passant by Jankowski himself picture the selection of the proper gift as a creative act.

The work Christmas Decoration (2010) is made from strings of fairy lights. The four separately blinking segments show the letters “DM” (Deutsche Mark, the German currency before the introduction of the Euro). The installation was created in the nineties for public spaces in pre Christmas Hamburg. The commentary on Christmas commercialism remains timeless although the currency has changed.

The short film Das Geschenk (2010) is about a present package deposited by Father Christmas on a public Christmas market. The reaction of the public stimulated by the abandoned object documents the conduct of a profoundly insecure society. The traditional perception of Christmas triggers at the same time the fear of a potential Trojan Horse. The actual episode is documented by a hidden camera.

Helga Maria Klosterfelde Edition is pleased to present Christian Jankowski’s latest edition „And your bird can sing“. This exhibition continues a collaboration of over ten years, in the course of which five editions were produced. Firstly, in 1996 and 1997 „Die Jagd“ (The Hunt) and from 1997 to 2006 the body of work „Magic Circle“, consisting of three series of silkscreen prints: „Mein Leben als Taube“ (My life as a dove), „Flock“ (Flock) and „Direktor Pudel“ (Director Poodle).

Christian Jankowski’s work discusses subjects of artistic creation, -representation and –conveyance. He is not only concerned with a critical reflection of his own role, but also transfers art into new and capricious contexts. Installations, videos, photography, posters and texts are merged in diverse experimental arrangements.

In „And your bird can sing“ the location of such transfer is a factory in China where CD players are serially produced in the shape of mass cultural props. Their forms reach from crash helmets to enlarged soft-drink cans and electronic guitars. The products are utterly removed from their functional means – neither can the guitar be played nor can the helmet be worn. Jankowski, who has originally studied music and played guitar in a rock band in the 80’s, travelled to the factory in China with his own instrument to initialize a contest amongst the factory workers in search of the most outstanding guitar solo.

The 34 soundpieces performed by the participants were separately burned on CD’s and each permanently installed by the artist into one of the CD guitars. The color of the guitar which now reproduces their play was chosen by the soloist.
