Helga Maria Klosterfelde is pleased to present a selection of early editions and artists books by Hanne Darboven. The exhibition brings together a selection of published works by Hanne Darboven dating from the early 1970s to the 1990s. Together they attest to a great diversity in the artist’s approach to editions.

Darboven (1940–2009) defined the whole of her artistic endeavor as “writing.” From the beginning of her career onward, she explored numerous manifestations of written composition and print: self-published multiples, artist’s books in small limited editions, manuscripts, and ever-growing collections of loose papers fill exhibition walls as framed pieces and meters of shelving as sorted files. Often Darboven consciously challenges the distinction between unique and multiple, for example by producing handwritten originals in facsimile or integrating photocopied or otherwise reproduced material into unique works. The process of writing down by hand always mirrors her great fascination for all print forms. Especially central is the way in which these types of work are presented; ranging from binders of loose papers to multi-volume literary book series to musical scores, Darboven’s pieces defy conventional exhibition formats.

Starting September 4th, 2008, Helga Maria Klosterfelde will be showing Editions by Hanne Darboven at Linienstraße 160 in Berlin.

Hanne Darboven (born 1941, lives in Hamburg-Harburg) is one of the internationally most recognized conceptual artists. Since the 1960s she developes systems to notate and visualize time and hereby links memory and presence.

As the earlier Editions “Weltansichten”, 1990 and the collaged postcard print “Untitled”, 1992, both published by Helga Maria Klosterfelde are also on display, the exhibition includes the recently finished portfolio “Ein Jahr: 1970”, 2007.

In this Edition, the artists returns to her conceptual roots: The 43 sheets and one index in a custom made folder are based on a series of drawings from 1970, which are significantly affected by the minimalistic use of forms characteristic for the early years of her work. Hanne Darboven developes a cubic system of notation that transforms the common gregorian calendar into a particular order arising from a specific logic. By arranging and formally and graphicially inscribing rows of numbers, the data of 1970 is being summarized into checksums, resulting from the index sheet formula: “2 K – 43 K / 00 / No 1 – No 42 / 366”. Hanne Darboven hereby creates graphic equivalients to the otherwise invisible phenomenon of time.

The materiality of the handwritten script in black ink on fine lined paper has been masterly transferred by Hamburg silkscreen printer Thomas Sanmann. The custom made map also includes a collaged portrait of the artist in 1968 in New York.

Beginning September 15th, 2006 Helga Maria Klosterfelde will show selected editions at the gallery space Linienstrasse 160.

For over 15 years this Hamburg based publisher has produced editions and multiples. The work commenced with a print by Lawrence Weiner issued in support of the Deichtorhallen project in Hamburg. It was followed by works of international contemporary artists, namely Hanne Darboven, Donald Baechler, General Idea, Joseph Kosuth, Matt Mullican, Dan Peterman, Kay Rosen, Rirkrit Tiravanija and Rosemarie Trockel. The editions often are of unusual material and size and always of very small numbers. Recent publications include works by John Bock, Steven Pippin, Lily van der Stokker, Christian Jankowski and Henrik Olesen. New projects with Ririkrit Tiravanija and Rosemarie Trockel are currently in progress.

In changing exhibitions, editions and multiples by different artists will be featured. The sequence starts with editions by Hanne Darboven of varying sizes and different periods.

Hanne Darboven, born 1941 in Munich, is one of the most prominent conceptual artists of the 20th century. She lives and works in Hamburg.
